What is the best antenna to build or buy a house for the reception of the VHF aviation band?
I just bought a decent scanner listen to the flow of air in my area. I am 11 miles from Honolulu airport and 4 miles from the airport MCB Kaneohe Bay. Use antenna that comes with, I get almost no HNL (just a little domestic air traffic in the 450 MHz band). There are a few hills between me and HNL. Wine is telescopic antenna. Calls to 50 ohm system. I read about 1 / 2 wave dipole, 1 / 4 wave ground plane, Bars J, Yagi, etc. I choose the best sound I can to HNL, which is headed, while obtaining aircraft not directional, but most of them are also in the same direction, and still retains some broadband. In short, I want everything. What are my best options and compromizes. I am reasonably good and can build my own or buy, and could even put antennas in a few steps together if it would work. Any help appreciated, or guidance references Web better. Thank you for your time
As it seems that want the "inside" of things and more things that I'm normal in the region of 125MHz, you said some band large enough. The hills can hurt you in the frequencies they want. VHF tends to be a line of vision proposed. For general coverage VHF in a "ubiquitous" fashion, if you need a range of directional antennas and line with a switch, or you might consider discone " style antenna. The latter did not gain much, but it is a reasonable compromise for most of the time. Get it up as high as local rules and neighbors to tolerate. If the length of coaxial cable starts to get more than 50 feet, you may want to consider some better quality coax (9913 or better to replace one of the RG series coaxial more limited) to avoid loss online. The question is hard as a board, but you'll be able to hang what is a signal that can be downloaded from the antenna. 4 miles and 11 miles are not so difficult to VHF, if you reasonably ground. I wonder how ugly "hills" actually are. At least assured of collecting all the face of these devices with a comm Discon. Remember - You raise the antenna! coaxial sources (sources http://www.radiobooks.com/products/rf910.htm possible) Discone http://radioworks.com/ccoax.html http://www.hamradio.com/ (many possibilities http://www.mfjenterprises.com/products.php?prodid=MFJ-1866) http://www.grove-ent.com/ANT9.html http://www.hamradio.com/ As For this, I always had the chance a very good relationship with Grove and Ham Radio Outlet. I can not speak for others.
